Last year, we&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartparenting.com.ph\/health\/your-health\/multivitamins-no-health-benefit-study-shows-a00026-20180601\">wrote about a research<\/a>, which showed that the most common supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, and multivitamins provided no benefits when it came to the prevention of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke or premature death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the study, which is published in the&nbsp;<em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology<\/em>, researchers analyzed over 150 clinical trials from January 2012 to October 2017. \u201cOur review found that if you want to use multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium or vitamin C, it does no harm \u2014 but there is no apparent advantage either,\u201d says Dr. Jenkins.&nbsp;<br><br>The team, however, found that folic acid may reduce the risk of heart disease. (If you\u2019re preparing your body for pregnancy or are already pregnant, taking folic acid is recommended.) And, \u201cniacin (vitamin B3) and antioxidants showed a very small effect that might signify an increased risk of death from any cause,\u201d reads the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018-05\/smh-mpv052518.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research hasn&#8217;t stopped people from taking supplements. For anyone who fears he or she may not be getting their daily recommended vitamins and minerals, a supplement can be the next best thing. But now what to take?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>We asked fitness professionals who are also moms about the supplements they take. Here&#8217;s what they said<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Iya Lagdameo, 36, owner of Plana Forma<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> A mom of three little children, Iya says the sniffles are always around so she takes vitamin supplements to hopefully boost her immune system. \u201cRight now I take Manuka honey, vitamin C, and a 4-in-1 tea that consists of ginger, lemongrass, malunggay, and turmeric.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nAccording to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/nutrition\/manuka-honey-health-benefits-uses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health.com<\/a>,&nbsp;<strong>Manuka honey<\/strong>&nbsp;is a type of honey native to New Zealand. Though honey contains natural antibacterial qualities, manuka honey is thought to be an even stronger infection fighter. Its main medical use is for treating minor wounds and burns, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/a-to-z-guides\/manuka-honey-medicinal-uses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WebMD<\/a>, but it\u2019s also used for other conditions like preventing and treating cancer, reducing high cholesterol, reducing inflammation, treating diabetes and gastrointestinal problems, and treating eye, ear, and sinus infections. However, evidence is limited on whether it really works for these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vitamin C<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of the best vitamins to keep your immune system at its optimal condition, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/food-nutrition\/foods-that-boost-the-immune-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healthline<\/a>. It helps in the production of white blood cells, which is the body\u2019s first and primary defense against viruses and bacteria. It\u2019s an essential vitamin, meaning it can\u2019t be produced by the body, but it is found in most citrus fruits like oranges, pomelo, and calamansi. It\u2019s also found in vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, kale, and spinach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moringa&nbsp;<\/strong>or malunggay, is rich in healthy antioxidants and vitamins, as is&nbsp;<strong>lemongrass<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>Turmeric&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>ginger&nbsp;<\/strong>have anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger can also help relieve nausea and lower blood sugar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Chantal Umali, 34, yoga teacher and trainer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nThe mom of one shares that she became keen on taking vitamins after she was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. \u201cThe vitamins really help to slow down the development of my condition. It\u2019s been really essential to my health,\u201d she shares. Her current daily vitamin intake includes vitamin C and D, Collagen, and vitamin B Complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vitamin D<\/strong>, which she thinks is important because \u201cwe\u2019re not exposed to healthy doses of sunshine as much anymore.\u201d Vitamin D helps improve immune function and the absorption of calcium in the bones, according to Chantal. It also helps with DNA repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Collagen<\/strong>&nbsp;contains two amino acids \u2014 proline and glycine \u2014 which are essential to the formation and repair of joints, bones, muscles, and tendons. \u201cIt also helps with skin elasticity, and is great for those of us who are physically active,\u201d adds Chantal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B vitamins<\/strong>&nbsp;are a group of nutrients that play many important roles in the body. They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Thiamine &#8211; converts nutrient into energy<\/li><li>Riboflavin &#8211; an antioxidant that converts food into energy<\/li><li>Niacin &#8211; aids metabolism, DNA production, and repair<\/li><li>Pantothenic acid &#8211; aids in hormone and cholesterol production<\/li><li>Pyridoxine &#8211; helps in amino acid metabolism, red blood cell production, and the creation of neurotransmitters<\/li><li>Biotin \u2013 essential for carbohydrate and fat metabolism<\/li><li>Folate \u2013 needed for cell growth, amino acid metabolism, the formation of red and white blood cells, and proper cell division<\/li><li>Cobalamin \u2013 important for neurological function, DNA production, and red blood cell development<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another vitamin that Chantal thinks is important is&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartparenting.com.ph\/health\/fitness-nutrition\/low-cholesterol-food-a1807-20181227\">omega-3<\/a><\/strong>, which you can get from healthy food like fish, walnuts, and soybeans. \u201cIt helps with inflammation, maintaining our sugar levels, and slows down muscular degeneration,\u201d she says.(Omega-3 also has a huge potential in reducing the risk of premature birth. Read more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartparenting.com.ph\/pregnancy\/health-nutrition\/omega-3-dha-epa-preterm-birth-a00041-20181210\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Kat Garcia, 36, celebrity fitness trainer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nYou\u2019d think that a fitness trainer would be at the peak of health, but Kat Garcia, whose clients include celebrities like Kathryn Bernardo, Jessy Mendiola, and Bettina Carlos, found out that she lacked zinc and needed glutathione after taking a nutrient deficiency test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Zinc&nbsp;<\/strong>helps the immune system&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartparenting.com.ph\/health\/your-health\/5-nutrients-that-boost-immunity-a1162-20170123\">fight off infection<\/a>, and it is needed for the body\u2019s defensive system to properly work. Pregnant women also need zinc as it\u2019s vital for baby\u2019s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some women take&nbsp;<strong>glutathione&nbsp;<\/strong>to lighten the skin tone, it\u2019s an antioxidant that may help protect against free radicals, which are harmful molecules created by toxins in the environment. It can also help reduce cell damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nKat stresses it is important to consult with your doctor first before ingesting any type of supplements. \u201cYou can\u2019t really experiment because it can either heal you or harm you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is only when the doctor has analyzed that your daily diet does not provide your body with enough nutrients do supplements become necessary. \u201cThere isn\u2019t sufficient data to suggest that healthy people benefit by taking certain vitamin or mineral supplements in excess of the daily recommended allowance,\u201d says the American Heart Association. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cYou should ideally try to meet your vitamin and mineral needs through your diet rather than supplements,\u201d says&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Howard D. Sesso<\/strong>, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
